How to unlock my iphone 3gs?(AT&T)

I'm new to this, but i'm very computer literate so I need help. I need to unlock my iphone 3gs for my dad, but i'm not sure how to deactivate it first. Which program to use to deactiviate it, then my understanding is, after i do that, I go to the at&T website and request for the unlock code, is that right?

Firstly, what is the 5 first digit of serial number and baseband (verify in Setting > General > About)

Need to know when iphone was made in,in what weeks..if u search in YouTube on how to unlock iphone 3gs there is a tutorial there that will help you figure out how you can find out when it was made believe it has to be made before like 34 or 36 week.
