Skype Could Release their iPhone App Next Week?
Back in Jan we had mentioned that two VOiP iPhone apps to watch out for was Skype for iPhone and Truphone for iPhone with Skype support. Unfortunately, its end of March and the iPhone apps (or their updates) have still to hit the App Store. But Om Malik from GigaOM...

Im rooting for jailbroken app. That way I can use it on the cell network.

you can already use it on the cell network via Nimbuzz on a jb'ed iphone if you install the mobile substrate called "Voipover3G" and add nimbuzz's bundle id to it...

THE voip app to watch, IMO, is named iCall. Just released in App Store.
Apple blindsighted them with sudden release after 6 months of waiting, and there are issues related to the OS software update, but iCall is ironing those out and soon to release updated app in App Store. Be patient, but give it a try in a few days.
The iCall app is amazing; can reroute cell call to voip when connected to wifi, saving your cell minutes. And for $10 a month, unlimited anytime calls in US and Canada.
As I said, due to time lapse between submission and approval and updated iPhone OS, GIVE THEM TIME TO UPDATE APP, probably in next few days. But terrific software worth watching, better features/pricing than other voip apps.

Also, may soon be a more feature-rich version on Cydia ;)

Though there are apps like Nimbuzz, Fring that you can use to make Skype calls over Wi-Fi and use the VOiPOver3G hack to make the calls over cellular data connection, they are still third party apps.
I keep getting Calls terminated when I use Fring, I have just started using Nimbuzz and it seems to be a lot better. But a native Skype app for the iPhone would be the perfect solution without any third party implementation.
I expect Skype to play by the book and release their app on the App Store which will be restrict you to make calls only over Wi-Fi network due to the SDK limitation and users of jailbroken iPhone will be able to the VOiPover3G hack to use the app over the cellular network.

Thanks Jim for the heads up, we will check it out.

How do you add nimbuzz bundle?

TruePhone was great, like 4 cents a minute from Japan to the states last month, over wifi it worked perfectly no crashes ... and it was a lifesaver... it was mentioned in the article that the update hasnt came? what update exactly are we waiting on?
Just sayin TruePhone worked very well

Good to see your comment, its been a long time.
You are right, Truphone is a solid app. Truphone was to release an update for their iPhone app which supports Skype. Their iPod Touch App already supports it.
You mentioned Truphone costs 4 cents a minute to make a call to US from Japan while it would cost only 2 cents if you use Skype.
That was the reason we were looking forward to Truphone update which allowed iPhone users to also make Skype calls.

it takes a few steps... first you obviously need to be jailbroken. then you need to install openSSH to your phone thru Cydia. Then you need to install SSH software for your computer... Cyberduck is great for Macs, or WinSCP for PCs. Do a youtube search for some good video tutorials on how to get SSH set up from your computer to your phone. Once you have that all set up, all you have to do is modify Voipover3G's .plist file which can be found here:
/Library/MobileSubstrate/DynamicLibraries/VoIPover3G.plistyou need to add the bundle ID "com.nimbuzz.Nimbuzz" into this file (in the parentheses where the other bundle IDs are), and you will then need to restart your phone. Then you should be able to use Nimbuzz's Skypeout feature over a 3G (or even EDGE) cellular connection. Hope that helps.
