iPhone 3GS Stuck in Recovery mode

Hello, I have a customer of mine who gave me their 3GS cuz it was stuck in recovery mode. He apparently had NEVER backed up the phone to anything and desperately wants to save the pics/info on it. Ive tried the hard reset (home and pwr button till reboots) but just goes back to the recovery mode screen (charge cord pic saying connect to iTunes).
I was told by someone to try Redsn0w but dont have a clue of what version i am supposed to use, as i dont have a clue which version software he has on this thing!
Soo i would really appreciate some help here!! I dont want to lose his pics!!
