Well Z, iphone with its simplicity made a lot of older generations use the mobile phone as a smart phone.

Unfortunately, this isn't something that can be dealt with through firmware. This is an issue of hardware and likely will only be in the next-gen iPhone :[

Geogo3r is right, it isn't something that can be enabled with a firmware update as the Broadcom chip BCM4325 in current iPhones and iPod Touches only support 802.11b/g.
