iphone fails to extract software (freezes)

on window 8.1 I can't update to ios 8.1. I pre-downloaded the update. when I try to update, iTunes gets stuck extracting the software. I have tried turning off my firewall.. but no go. I have tried on two networks. also no go.

Reset hosts file in wintendo. That might do the trick. Just make it plain and simple.

actually. that was not the problem.. the host file was ok. I deleted the update file ipsw for the third time.. downloaded it again and shazzam! the update worked. I am guessing that the file was corrupt. why apple can't determine that rather than indicating some random issue is beyond me.
