unhealthy iPhone4, what IOS version

To jailbreak my legacy iPhone4 (and use it just as an iPod) I need to know what IOS version it is running.
However I can't try Settings>General>About because when I turn the phone on, it is in setup mode.
I can't set up the phone because I have no SIM and don't know anyone who can lend me one
I've installed redsn0w with the phone in both normal and DFU mode but it doesn't identify the IOS version.
Is there some tool or hack that will show the IOS version?

Not sure, but does iTunes tell you the version when you connect your iPhone 4 to it.
