I also can't get it to work on my 3GS. I shook it for a good 30 seconds with no result

Nevermind I got it working... read elsewhere that shaking it 3 times was a inside joke to see how many people would shake their iPhone in a manner that may seen inappropriate and that to activate it turn your iPhone upsidedown and shake once. Worked like a charm for me.
