Whenever Apple releases a new version of iPhone OS or iTunes, one of the most frequently asked questions by users who have jailbroken and/or unlocked their iPhone is whether it is safe to download and install them. MuscleNerd from the iPhone Dev Team has answered this question for us about...

what's the point of the modem firmware upgrades anyways?
-
As of now, Dev Team hasn't announced a release date. We'll keep you posted.
-
They are critical updates from Apple's point of view, they fix the holes
used by the Dev Team to unlock the iPhone, making it even more difficult to
unlock. Remember, it's a cat and mouse game. -
You can check this jailbreak guide if you have iPhone 3G:
http://www.iphonehacks.com/2009/06/stepbystep-guide-to-jailbreak-iphone-3g-running-iphone-os-30-using-redsn0w-windows.htmlor this one if you have iPhone 3GS:
http://www.iphonehacks.com/2009/07/stepbystep-guide-to-jailbreak-iphone-3gs-running-iphone-os-30-using-redsn0w-windows.htmlThey have links to firmware 3.0, which you can use to restore your iPhone
and then steps to jailbreak it. -
Sorry about that, Dev Team's hasn't clarified but PwnageTool should be able
to jailbreak and unlock iPhone 2G as Apple hasn't updated the modem firmware
of iPhone 2G for more than a year now. However, it is better to avoid upgrading to iPhone OS 3.1 and wait for Dev
Team to release PwnageTool for iPhone OS 3.1. -
If upgrading iTunes to 9 and running a jailbroken 3.0.1 3G phone, will the new iTunes features (specifically the app rearrangement) work? I wouldn't expect it to play nice with non-App store apps, but of course it would be nice if it did! fwiw I'm syncing with Mac iTunes. Thanks!
-
Unfortunately it's not possible to unlock iPhone OS 3.1, which was the reason Dev Team had warned users to avoid upgrading to it.I guess you'll have to wait for Dev team to figure out a way to unlock it.
-
I was confused about this same situation as well but I found out that you have to have the OS 3.1 update as well as the iTunes 9 in order to use the app rearrangement... i did a lil research on found that out.
-
Based on the release notes of iPhone OS 3.1, you need to update your iPhone with it to support some of the iTunes 9 features such as Genius mixes, ability to organize iPhone apps, improved syncing options etc.

iPhone Hacks is the video of todays special event released yet
if so where can I watch it ViDEO
thank you -
Is it possible to downgrade from 3.1 to 3.0 if your iphone is not jailbroken?
-
Take the SIM and put it into a regular phone, remove the SIM PIN in that phone, then stick it back in iphone, no more nag.
-
I didn't bother checking the iphonehacks site for your warning to not to update my phone. But silly me I did. So I will wait until the Dev Team has put out their update for pwntools. Is there a mailing list that I can sign up for so that I'll know when the update is out?
-
No, you cant rearrange the apps with 3.0.1, you need 3.1. Otherwise, iTunes 9 works fine. No issues with "free" apps, but Cydia apps dont show up.

Read the Blog http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ or follow them on twitter. I am hoping to see purplera1n make a comeback...

What about tethering? If I update iTunes will I lose tethering?
-
can you tell me that how we hack this? or is this possible to hack this?
-
I have a JB 3.0 and new iTunes 9. I can't rearrange apps as many said. But I also can't sync photos, there is no tab to do so.
Anyone with the same problem, or it's just mine ?
-
Yeah, you can watch the special event by following this link:
http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/0909oijasdv/event/index.html?internal=ijalrmacu -
rearranging apps with itunes 9 works only with firmware 3.1 and on.
-
You won't lose tethering if you upgrade to iTunes 9. But some of the iTunes 9 features like organizing iPhone apps, better syncing, Genius mixes etc will only work if you upgrade to iPhone OS 3.1.

Does 3.1 kill tethering hack?

Does 3.1 kill tethering hack?
-
I know from a couple of people who have already tried that the tethering hack does not work with 3.1. The tethering button remained after the update until it was used and then it disappeared from the System menu. Attempts to reapply the Profile that enabled it in the first place do not seem to work to bring it back.
-
@josh, i haven't tried the 3.1 yet so i can't say for certain but the issue you are having with your tethering button disappearing happens to me something on my iPhone 3G on firmwares 3.0 and 3.01. The only way i get it back it by resetting the network settings to get it back. maybe this will help
-
arghhh... anyway to return to 3.0 ?
-
i hope the tools come out soon, but what about ripdev's installer app? I got it so that i can easily load my JB apps on to my new Iphone OS but it takes them months... MONTHS to come out with the new updates. They just made it 3.0 compatible a few weeks ago.
-
I have a question about when it is finally time to upgrade to the lame 3.1.
Do you need to take all of your apps out of categories before doing the backup of 3.0 and restoring on 3.1? I heard somewhere if you do a backup with your apps in categories, and then you are not jailbroken yet, you will lose those apps.
