AT&T Allows VoIP iPhone Apps to Work Over 3G Network
As you might know, until now AT&T had restricted iPhone apps like Skype, Vonage (which was released yesterday) to work only over Wi-Fi and not over the 3G mobile network as they had concerns that such apps could cause significant network congestion. That's History! AT&T has just announced that they...

YESSSSS!!!!! i might now join skype.
-
I hope this pushes the Google Voice application back into production.
-
FCC! FCC! FCC! - 'FREEDOM!!!!" - Hope this will open the entire market.
-
Can I start using skype in the 3g network now?
-
Are they trying to please us by giving VoIp connectivity?? Or are they further overloading their network??
How come 1 month back they said they cannot allow due to network congestion issues and now they approves it... does that means they are compromising the quality!! I guess they always did...

Question to ATT: Where does the money from so many new iphone customers goes????? Are they investing money to improve the network or are they just giving out fat pay checks to their managements??
-
to be honest how much skype are you going to use if you've not jailbroken your phone as you won't be online to receive calls unless you are going to run Skype and do nothing else. If you have 30 friends on skype how many of you are going to be bothered to go to the fuss of having to run skype in the foreground because you might just get a call?
backgrounding is only a reality on a 3Gs where it's not bogged down by ram issues.
-
voip over 3g has been reality for every person who is able to use a computer (so that excludes 90% of all mac users) since a year or so. so who cares about that? and as metromepmb put it, without backgrounder + insomnia it's anyways not that useful. but hey, just wait for apple to release that. idiots.

They have been upgrading their network. The upgrade wasn't finished 1 month ago, it was finished just over a week ago when they launched mms. The newly upgraded network can now handle voip traffic, which it couldn't before.
-
have you been living under a rock?? They have been doing upgrades to their network left and right. Already starting the faster 3G (7.2Mbps) towers in certain cities.

The networks blocking services and the like is unacceptable -- we pay our bills and our phones, so why can we not use it for what we want?
-
Ok but I don't have service were I live. Is there an app that will route calls to my iphone that is on my wifi at home?
-
this is great news and a big win for consumers. now we just need to get net neutrality passed.
-
Easy: Skype could use "Notifications" like many other IM applications do to notify you of an inbound call or message.
-
AT&T has not blocked it from being used on their 3G. You can now do VoIP with a data card or tethering your iPhone or jailbraking your iPhone together with 3G unrestrictor.
-
Most VoIP providers allow you to call forward your number to a mobile in case you have no data service (wifi or 3g). As long as you have data services (wifi or 3g) VoIP should work seamlessly.
-
Could but you need to jailbreak and run 3g unrestrictor. Or just be patient and wait for the app update.

Super duper great news! Hail iPhone! Hail AT&T! Yeehaaa!
