Even if the iPhone purchased directly from the Apple store is hackable, knowing it is coming locked into AT&T is not worth the full retail price. You might as well get a subsidized iPhone. I'd only pay full retail for an unlocked iPhone.

Same - I would rather 'spread out' the pain and save $400 up front. I am sure that AT&T will still force a data plan if you try and use the phone (only) through them with WiFi for data - that (or using a PrePaid AT&T plan) would be the only benefit to paying up front for the phone up front (saving $30/mo over 2 years is $720 +fees) or about half the price of difference.

I used iphone from the day firmware 1.0.1 came out. I used with att and t-mobile without data plan and I bought it from Apple Store but no one say a work that I need data for the iphone. I will pay 700 dollars plus tax for iphone which is unlockable and not for the one that is locked to ATT because I will bring it to oversea to use or give to my sister in Asia.

that's so stupid. If it's in contract i understand it should be locked but when pay the full price for the phone and own the phone it should be usable to any network.

it doesnt really matter since your still going to be stuck with AT&T what they should do is allow you to make it work with any sim, so that if your out of the country you dont have to worry about ruining it with a jailbreak
