iPad 'Not Charging' Via USB? Here's Why And Your Options
It has been an exciting few hours as the first batch of users received their iPads via UPS or from the retail outlets. However, some users have reported that their iPad shows a message "Not Charging" in the status bar when its connected to some computers or USB charges. In...

Fuckin stupid!!! It's not the port. I run boot camp of windows 7 on a MacBook Pro 13 and it will not charge the iPad but once I boot into the snow leopard, the iPad charges fine. It's all bullshit what they have on there site.

Never by any first out versions of anything. That is the answer. Just like a car. Never buy the first year of a new model. All the bugs are usually worked out in the following year or model update.
Live and learn
your always the guinee pig when you buy an apple "I-anything".

That's what I told most ppl wait for the next one. But of course ppl never listen and expect the best in the first one. The hole internal needs a refresh.
-
Really? Then Apple want we buy their product only?
-
Its no different than plugging in a usb hard drive into your port some pcs can handle it and some cant, Hence the y cable you get with most of them. Its not Apples fault your USB cant handle it... Stop HATING..

Wunder Radio plays beautifuly with the IPAD, but the XM-Sirius Player do not work, even though the player app say it's also for IPAD. Can anyone please explain this?
-
I agree! It just has a bigger battery, that draws to much power from the USB port for most computers to Handel. And it's probably working on the snow leopard and not windows because there is some sort of power management built in that can give the ipad the significant amount of power to change it.
-
The ipad should have had a charging led just for this very reason.
-
Sounds annoying, but hardly surprising nor indicative of any harware/software flaw.
Consider the iPad is a in essence a 10" netbook (sans keyboard and full featured, user controllable OS).
How many of those to you know that can charge from USB??
-
People are lame, if you can plug it into your computer to charge it, get off your ass, move 2 feet and plug it into the wall
-
My iPad wasn't charging at first on my laptop but now it is. I think it was because the battery wasn't completely empty.
-
Does Windows have the appropriate drivers for the high power USB ports? Does it know how to turn on high power delivery? Remember that the device asks for more power, it's up to the USB port (and thus the computer driving it) to crank up the juice.

Ipad Charged fine for me. with no issues on my late 2009 Macbook pro.
but now im converting videos, and have iphone + ipad plugged in all at once, now i get the not charging indication. after leaving it for an hour, it really WAS charging, as stated by others, just more slowly.i have no issues with this. The iPad easily lasts till bedtime anyways. this is just water under the bridge.

It Fried my Wall charger/adapter. -
You mac people are fucked, but I have found a work around for most pc's, however, the software involved is not completely stable yet so use at your own risk (I would make a back-up).
Here are some links for most of the programs made by motherboard manufacturers to help fix the problem:
http://event.asus.com/mb/2010/AI_Charger/ (ASUS)
http://www.msi.com/index.php?news_no=1013&func=newsdesc (MSI)
http://www.gigabyte.com/microsite/185/on-off-charge.htm (GIGABYTE)
http://www.asrock.com/feature/AppCharger/index.asp (ASROCK)The programs identify your device and specify how much power goes to it. Most usb ports have a standard set in the bios for providing power which is maxed at 2.5watts/500Ma per port, while in actuality most usb 2.0 ports can generate as much as 8watts/1.6Ammps. The programs made by the motherboard manufacturers externally alter the BIOS to allow power above the standard to be sent to specific ports (like the one your Ipad is hooked up to). That being said, it alters your BIOS so BACK THAT COMPUTER UP! (no, not that ass.)
I personally have only used the Asus fix (ASUS Ai Charger)and have had no problems on any of my computers:
Dell Precision M6500 mobile workstation,
Dell Optiplex (both 740 and 760),
And an Asus p5n-e sli motherboard based systemI have seen rumors about BSODs and Ipods not syncing correctly, so be careful.
Best of luck

Brilliant worked like a charm on my ASUS motherboard, thanks.

I've never seen so many horrible spelling errors. You people commenting need to pick up the new Kindle app for your iPad - it comes with a dictionary.iphonehacks.com, were teh intellejent peepel hayn oot.
-
Worked great for me and I have an HP motherboard, thanks.

I say "BS"! My computer and monitors would charge the iPad 2 just fine until the last firmware update. One minute it worked and the next it didn't. Now I see the stupid "not charging" message on the screen.
-
That's more than likely a windows thing. There are plenty of items that charge through some ports and won't charge through Windows simply because Windows wants to verify what it is and have a driver in place before it will charge. I've had two cell phones that won't charge on a windows machine (or on the mac if I'm booted to windows) but charge fine if I'm booted to Mac OS. Windows like to play the control game too, just like Apple. "Install the drivers, let us have control of your device, and we'll allow the port to have power."

My iPad used to charge fine on my pc at work while I watch the football. For some reason it suddenly doesn't charge via the usb into the pc. This has nothing to do with the power of the pc as it worked last week and it also doesn't work on the other pc around me. It has nothing to do with the recent update either as I've not updated mine since new. Its a bug me thinks and just need a fix as I can't plug it in the wall and watch it from my desk, so not being lazy just not practical. Any ideas??

I really doubt that Windows controls this via the drivers. As the article describes, this is a matter of hardware - whether the physical device is putting out enough power. The USB standard requires that ports be powered but at a lower level than what iPad needs. This is why some ports work and others don't - some provide more power than others (e.g. typically the ones on a desktop provide more power than a laptop, even when it's not running on battery). So don't blame Windows for this - blame the hardware.

This is an asshole comment. What if I'm outside/in an aircraft/powercut?If your logic held, why bother with batteries...just plug everything into the wall. Hey, why frigging bother with batteries for an electric car or wheelchair...let's just have a 2 foot cable.Jeez, you really prove there's a shallow end in the human gene pool.
-
nope, I agree with windows not charging if it does not have drivers. It happens with my cellphone. My cellphone does not charge either if I don t install the driver.
-
ASUS Ai Charger is charging my iPad rapidly while connecting to Windows XP.
-
There is something missing in this charging story for the iPad. Various articles claim you need to 10W wall charger and that other 5W chargers (and various USB ports) won't work. Sure enough 3rd party iPod 5W chargers won't work; yet Apple's 5W iPod charger does work.

My Ipad charges fine off the Mac (1% for every 5 minutes when Ipad is turned off)It should work ok.
