It depends, if the Dev Team can unlock the baseband included in iPhone OS 4.0 then preserving the baseband might not be required.
But if it's not possible to unlock the new baseband then the only option for users who want to software unlock their iPhone would be to preserve the baseband using tools like PwnageTool.

Is there any way that i can upgrade it to 3.1, 3.1.2 or maybe 3.1.3 and still be able to unlock it ?
It is pretty annoying, that i am not able to install many apps due to my old OS version.
I do only have a PC
, so i can not use pwnage tool for mac. :(Any help would be much apreaciatet :)

Roi you should be able to upgrade your 3gs to version 3.1.3 through itunes and then jailbreak it with spirit ... www.spiritjb.com easy to use and is untethered which means when you turn of your Idevice you dont need to use your computer to start the idevice up again. One click 30 secs and your done :)
