The warning is applicable for users who have jailbroken their iPhone using Spirit jailbreak. According to Dev team's tweet, you should be fine if you have jailbroken your iPhone 3G with redsn0w or PwnageTool.
The safer option is to avoid it until we get more clarity. -

An official unlock via a carrier, eg. O2 UK will remain unlocked as it an Authorised one.

The simplest answer is, do not install the new Itunes update on your iphone, if you're unsure of what to do. Just say no to Itunes until when the next announcement goes out.

When will be out the unlock tool for the 3GS 05.12.01 baseband, I still waiting for it to use my phone, please do something. otherwise is the iOS4 GM the official release one ? can i install it and preserve my baseband waiting for the unlock ?

Upgrading to a new firmware updates the baseband which means your unlock will be lost.

Don't see the hassle with updating Itunes, You can always downgrade it by having the older version saved somewhere. I've been doing that a lot because trying the ios4 GM on my iphone 3G requires itunes 9.. used the beta but now the original 4.2 is better because you don't need a UDID to activate your phone.
If you want to downgrade itunes on a mac all you have to do is drag it from the application folder into the trash and delete itunes library under Username- Music - Itunes then install the older version. Its as easy as that and by the way you can test drive the 4.0GM with AT&t prepaid

Ok...still lost. I have a 3G with 3.1.3 and upgraded base band. Everyone is talking about the unlock. I used Spirit to Jailbreak, NOT unlock. Can I upgrade to iOS4 and still Jailbreak?

It might also be helpful to know that if something goes wrong and you need to restore the phone you will lose your jailbreak and not be able to use Spirit again. No reason to update to 9.2 right now.

ok what happen to me was i update my itunes to 9.2 and it wont detect my iphone 3g (jailbreak with spirit). weird huh.... anyway just wanna double confirm before i do something wrong. i have a iPhone 3g 8gb and is official unlock set. so i can go on for os 4.0 without any problem with jailbreak?
