I have used the m4r trick since the 1st gen iPhone. It still works best for me and it's totally free.

I used that when I had a PC, and didn't know what to do when I switched to a mac. Now I use garageband, which is ten times easier!

Because the iTunes store now sells ringtones for a price of $1.29... Make sense? Not really... Get the whole song for .99 or 30seconds of it for $1.29...

Apple isn't the sole player in selling ringtones. In order for them to legally support ringtones, they have to negotiate the licensing through the music industry. Remember, the folks that wanted to prevent music from being released on new tech, such as digital downloads, CDs & even cassette tape. I think that they might have supported 8-Track, since the equipment to record on that media was not readily available. Players were the most popular items. Anywhoo, they have a hand in Apple's pricing, for without their licensing Apple could not provide support for ringtones. Of course, the more popular alternative to purchasing a tune that you already own @ $1.29, is renting ringtones for atleast that much for a few months. Then be rebilled for that ringtone to continue to use it for a few more months, etc

Been using the ringtone hack for awhile now. Just take any mp3 put it in itunes, cut it down to size, save as AAC, change the file extension to m4r, add it to the ringtone folder via ssh or iphonebrowser and your done. Works great.

A little easier way, take the mp3, use audacity to cut a selection out of the mp3 (an I believe the iPhone will accept up to 40 seconds for a ringtone right?, why is everyone saying 30?) open the cut mp3 in iTunes, convert it to aac, find the converted file in your iTunes folder, rename from m4a to m4r, then place the m4r file where you want it, to be permanently, and double click on it. The next time you sync with iTunes it'll go to your device. (if the song is longer than 40 seconds, it won't copy over, and you'll have to go back through the process)

Its the same trick for mac, i just tried it on itunes 10 and still works like charm. Just convert the song to 25sec ACC file and search with finder, change file by clicking right clicking and clicking on get info, change extension to m4r and you can use it for a a ringtone. I used garageband for a while but this one saves me time.

You don't have to do the whole ssh thing, just copy to desktop after convert and open with Itunes, sync your iphone and you are good to go

How do i do it with iOS 4.1? i cant see the option for custom ringtones on my iphone 4?

Just had apple support on over this issue. They say only way now to get ringtones to sysnc in itunes 10 is to buy again via your phone. You cannot use those you already have stored in m4r format on your computer!! a PISS take methinks, someone in the know find a workaround please
