imageRIM Co-CEO Fires Back At Steve Jobs Criticism

Earlier in the day, Google's Vice President of Engineering Andy Rubin and TweetDeck’s CEO Iain Dodsworth had responded to Steve Jobs’ anti-Android rant. RIM’s co-CEO, Jim Balsillie has also fired back at Steve Jobs remarks that RIM would have to ‘move beyond their comfort zone and become a software company’...

I think that Flash is a deal breaker for any web site that won't work without it. Why should a web site creator force someone to install some closed corporate software just to use your site? If Flash was open source and available to everyone, I might feel differently.

Flash is needed for a platform like iPad!! Too many websites use it for flash not to be necessary!!

websites should NOT be made out of flash, i cant stand having to load a whole website made out of flash, it wasnt designed for that, its a multimedia platform.
If i see a whole website designed with flash i leave, flash seems to get over-used these days, thank god for flashblock.

Flash SHOULD be supported on the iPad as it is a necessary component, same with PDF and Javascript. Flash only crashes when the designers of the content take shortcuts and dont enable correct checks.

RIM has the business market, iPhone/iPad has the pop culture market... thats not going to change unless Steve allows policies and encryption as standard with data backup/security guarantee.

I agree with both! I see both sides of the argument. It just comes down to what customers prefer.

All this is good tho, competition with Apple might make them make EVEN better products than they already are.

I think the tides are starting to turn.

As of now I think the iPhone is still on top.
Right now the android alternative is too battery hungry.
Some of my co-workers have them, and I notice they have to be diligent in plugging them in at their desk, in their car, etc. It reminds me of when I had the original iPhone and I don't want to do that again.

but, I could see myself making a switch once my contract runs out in a year. The biggest deciding factor for me being how hard Apple clings to their anti-Flash stance.

i love apple product, but i also agree that flash player is necessary on ipad. plus blackburry doesn't keep you wait 2-3 months for unlock code. if they make bigger PlayBooks and better smart phones than iphone i would definitely switch. only because that i live in Europe and I've been waiting for iphone 4 unlock code for more than 2 months. which i got it on my BDay.

That is what most people don't understand. It's not flash that doesn't work it is people who misuse it.

RIM's CEO makes more sense than Steve and I believe it when Steve "distorts" facts. To have TweetDeck (which he referred to TwitterDeck) comment on Steve's claims and to compare quarters with different cycles. He even goes on to say they activate more iOS devices than Android when Google only counts Smartphones.

I have seen both the Playbook and the Galaxy tab and I strongly believe they will be successful products. In truth I think the 2G iPad will just match both these tablets specs. Steve is just worried about his stocks and so he makes incendiary comments.

I don't think this is a really good or measured response from RIM. I am not a fan of Flash, it is a platform that is too easily manipulated by the people who order a web site (i want flashy movey things with no content), and not properly used and implemented by those that do the development work. I also agree that the technology does not work for touch devices and is still not operational on pads or phones (yet). It's a platform that rides on a system and is the catalyst for misguided argument in these cases. Who cares if one outsells the other, Q3/Q4.. is that your only criteria, product penetration to the world? Stop being a bitter sh*t Mr. Jobs, follow your heart and your research and do what you want to do, but what's the point of trying to poke the bears and the bee hives you see along the way?

Flash is cool, but at this time I will have to agreed with apple because flash actually does slows down the experience. I had a nexus one for some time and the flash experience was not nearly close to good, it always slowed down my phone and in some cases it crashed. Therefore I respect apples decision on not supporting flash.

I guess that in 2011-2012 we will see who was right.

If all the tablets turns into 10# or bigger models then I guess Steve was right. If not then he was wrong.

I look forward to follow this thing with the tablet size/res.

When all that is said, I'm on Steve side on this one.

A 7" is to big compared to the smartphone, and to small compared to the iPad. Just look at the company who created a 5" tablet. I don't get it.

As far as Flash goes, I don't think it's a good idea to have one on the device.

    1. It will draw a lot of power on it's battery, unless Adobe makes it handheld compatible.

    2. Slow in performance. Sure Android has flash on it, it may be good for a few minute or so then you will start seeing degration in the performance and thus slows the phone to nearly usuable or even crash.

    3. To a certain extend, yes a tablet notebook does have flash as it is a laptop, and all you are doing is rotating the screen to make it touch based. And that is because it's a laptop, which has a very good cpu, and a very good graphics card in it that will run Flash without any problem. As for the tablet like the ipads, it's not neccesary to have a flash on those device. As it is not as powerful as a laptop/desktop.

So if you really want to have flash on your handheld device. then go get a netbook. they are light and portable and I'm sure you can carry those around wherever you go.

yep entire flash sites are stupid, so are Flash menus. The only thing flash should be used for is those fancy opening splash screens at the most... however Apple should learn to listen more to their customers.

So if 10" is a minimum you need why are they making ipads with 9" screens then lol

The way i look at it is, flash has existed on the web longer than the ipod, iphone, and ipad. So you can't give people something, and then take it back, or expect them to conform to your belief system(distortion field). Human beings do not like things taken away from them. Apple does not believe this, they have created a system that basically removes the end user from any sort of decision making. Their entire system is closed, and once you enter you can see there is no freedom of decision. Itunes is a perfect example of this. I don't know how many times I have heard people say...." I wish i could do this, or that in itunes", but you can't. Steve jobs reminds me of that kid we all knew when we were small, you know the one with all the cool toys, that would only let you play with them the way he wanted you to. A bit of a socialist.

    P.S.
if 10" is the minimum for touch screen accuracy then he just basically said that all the ipods, and iphones cannot be used accurately? Sounds a little confusing.

Don't blame CEO, they want RIM win.RIM has strange culture and self distruct political environment. In RIM if a new hired person figure out major problem and introduce efficient approach, both manager and his buddy group member will proof their wrong approach works. just like someone point out driving a car is right way, pushing a car is wrong way, then both manager and his buddy group member will hate you, and proof that 3 person can also move the car by pushing it. cheating email will be sent to some vice president, saying like: see, the car moving, pushing a car is a natural part of the process, in order to deny new hired contribution of introducing skill of drive a car, they have to deny merit of driving a car.It is very strange company culture and strange company political environment, it promote stealing and cheating skill. RIM’s management may be a typical instance in MBA course. This culture deny or steal hardworking team members’ contribution/innovation, generate strange political environment, destroy RIM.So don't blame CEO, some of their VPs and VPs' expert generate terrible culture and self destruct political environment.
