Steve Jobs Confirms Screen Rotation Lock Will Be Mute Switch From iOS 4.2; Can't Be Customized
When Apple introduced the iPad back in January 2010, it was shown to come with a hardware switch on the side that was labeled as a mute button. At the time of the launch in April however, Apple mysteriously changed the mute switch to the screen rotation lock switch. Many...

I don't have an iPad, but borrowed one for a day. I'd rather have the mute switch.
-
I'm happy simply because I hate when I try to turn down the volume just a little bit and it automatically drops the volume to zero which mutes it too. It's a big pain.
-
As long as the orientation lock still exists in one form or another I don't see a problem. Muting with the switch seems to be a better option than the currently annoying method.
-
Well, as always, Poppa Steve knows best what's best for us.
-
I would prefer a mute switch. I hardly ever use screen orientation lock, but use mute every night when going to sleep to silent alerts (which I want on during the day) and during meetings
-
I prefer the mute switch. The iPad's orientation lock is a double tap of the home button and a swipe away just like on the iPhone.
-
Forget about the lock/mute issue... Since when has Jobs started taking mms's from "customers"????
-
This so epically sucks. I don't care about a mute switch.
-
Don't care about the mute, rather keep the lock..
-
That sucks.., I use the switch everyday to lock the orientation. This will be an option worth jailbreaking for.
-
No prob Steve, well Jailbreak it and customize it the way we should be able to
-
There are a lot of people that I wish came with a mute switch...
-
time to JAILBREAK!!!!!!
up yours Jobs
we want control!!!! -
Yeah, we want mute switch

Mute is as easy as holding volume down for a second. Goes from full volume to mute instantly. A lot easier than multiple gestures to lock a screen. But as someone else pointed out ...seriously. Jobs using his iPhone to read customer emails and still uses the default sent from my iPhone crap... Seriously? Is it April 1st all ready?

As a reader using the iBooks, I rather have the orientation switch as I use it a lot.

I hear the new screen lock method will only lock it in portrait mode (like iPhone) a HUGE loss of functionality from the switch which allows you to lock in Landscape or upside down too, both helpful when lying in bed.
Holding down volume button works fine for muting.
Plus an iPad has no loud alarms or rings, so silencing it super-urgently (eg in a meeting) is not a big issue like it is with a phone.
This change is VERY annoying. -
Just make that damn button configurable.Or I will destroy my iPad and buy a Adam tablet instead

Miss the lock switch and what it back, very easy to mute with the volume control
