They replaced my iPhone 4 with 2 dead pixels that were only visible during dark sequences. I used the flashlight app with the black screen to demonstrate. This is my third iPhone 4 due to the first having the yellow blotches and apple has never gave me a problem with replacing the device.

I have replaced 2 1st Gen iPhones, 1 3G and two iPhone 4's due to backlighting issues. (blotchy spots either darkened or excessively illuminated) and never had any more than a two second discussion with Genius reps. I showed them where it was and boom, replacement phone just like that. Great product service record in my opinion. Anyone else having replacement problems; come to Pittsburgh and schedule an appointment with our store.
P.S. 3 times while I was at the Apple store I witnessed people with cracked screens due to their own fault of drops and/or accidents and they were also replaced; no other questions asked. -
Does the phone need to be under warranty for them to replace?

Heck, i took my 16gb 3G in about 3 months ago because it had 1 dead pixel.. it was about a year out of warranty, and i never bought apple care, and they replaced it with a new 3GS 16GB because they didn't have any 3G's in stock anymore :).. nothin but gold stars for Apple Support imo

I just bought an iPtch 4g an had 1, and only one dead pixel, actually I'am waiting for a new one "because they didn't had any in stock", but the point is they changed it, im form Mexico city btw.

Well replacement is one thing but Apple should try and ensure alot of quality.

I've had one dead pixel on my 3GS for ages now. It really doesn't bother me too much but sometimes it is like a fly on the wall that you can't smack. Since its a 3GS (more than 90 days old...) do I still have a shot at taking it to a genius and getting a free repair? My iphone has never incurred any other damage on it, ever. (Knock on wood!)

2 of those we out of warranty. Still replaced! The others were still under first year warranty. No AppleCare warranties.

They just showed them the phone, gave a little "wah wah" speech about how it was in their pocket when they ice skating in northern Alaska (or whatever) and they ave them a replacement phone right on the spot!
