iPhone 4S Supports HSPA+
Ever since Apple unveiled iPhone 4S at the Let's talk iPhone event earlier in the week, there has been confusion whether Apple's new iPhone supports HSPA+ and to add to the confusion, we heard reports that Apple and AT&T are working together to change the network indicator in the status bar to "4G" with an iOS software update.
Brian Klug at AnandTech has just posted a nice article to clear the confusion.

So is it possible to iPhone 4s to have 4g network ?
-
No, not really, iPhone 4S doesn't support 4G LTE or WiMAX, but carriers like AT&T market HSPA+ as 4G. So in their eyes iPhone 4S supports 4G (but it isn't real 4G).

HSPA+ is not 4G/LTE technology..if im not wrong HSPA+ bitrate speed beyond 21Mbps..Operator must follow 3GPP standarization about HSPA+ and 4G/LTE technology..we cant sell HSPA+ as 4G/LTE technology..

I read somewhere that the ITU reclassified HSPA+ as a 4g technology. With all the confusion and marketing, I think they caved in.I personally don't consider HSPA+ 4g though.

thats a gr8 find...if it really supports HSPA+ then it would be awesome

Is it possible that apple and AT&T have already set this up and are just waiting for jailbreakers to show their hand so they can release a firmware update that not only shows 4G but also just happens to patch the ios5 exploit?Just throwing it out there

They can do whatever they want . I mean come on those stupid asswholes have the government on their side so they can and will sell you the iPhone 4s as a 4G

LTE and WiMAX don't matter if you can't get 4G speed off the network, real world testing is all that really matters, and in a few days we'll have the results.

They're not marketing the 4s as a 4g device. It's specifically mentioned in the keynote. Several other companies ARE marketing their HSPA+ phones with speeds up to 14.4mbps as a 4g phone though. Apple simply made a comparison and stated that they won't join in the debate over what's 4g and what isn't.

I live in the Bay Area and 4g is practically non existent. I'd be happy with being able to reach 10mbps, regardless of the technology used. Seeing that I can reach 3-5mbps on my iphone 4, I'm quite positive that the iphone 4s can reach 6-10mbps in my area.It may not be 4g per say, but who cares? It comes down to how fast my webpages load when there's no wifi around. The majority of my time is spent in wifi areas anyway. I'm sure it's the same for many others as well.

But is that equal to 4G speeds?
-
What is the real world 4g speeds you are referring to? In my area? It's zero.

HSPA is plenty enough for me for now...i have HSPA round where i live and i hit 15 16 mbps...4G seems like over kill for now as there is no coverage...i am glad you are clarifying this because people still believe that HSPA are 4g
