iPhone 4S Drop Test Results Are In
Apple's new iPhone 4S comes with a glass back panel like iPhone 4. The glass panels are made of aluminosilicate glass, which is the same type of material used in the windshields of helicopters and high speed trains.
Though these panels are said to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic, which makes the glass virtually unbreakable and scratch-proof, we know that they are prone to damage.

Of course it breaks, it may be strong gorilla glass but it's still glassthey can't get it too much stronger without greatly increasing the price of the phone on current technology

and this is why you buy a case for your phone, it decreases the chance of it breaking drastically even the cheap cases

Broken glass is not a big deal and they probably knew that. They can put a new panel on it for 30 or 40 bucks
