Apple is just slowly getting rid of competition

"..."data tapping patent": a patent on an invention that marks up phone numbers and other types of formatted data in an unstructured document, such as an email, in order to enable users to bring up other programs (such as a dialer app) that process such data." - Sony Ericsson had this for years - my P900 had this feature in 2004. When US will finally change their laws to ban patenting things, which have been implemented already?

Too bad most of the Apple patents date back to 1999, because their lawyers had the foresight to protect in-house developments.

Because Google now holds a bucket of patents in the mobile hardware space. Apple wants to stay well away from that. Moreover, they also hold a cash heap that rivals Apple. You don't throw rocks at the hornet's nest. You hit the individual hornets with a flyswatter :)
