"You must remove your underwear during takeoff and landing" makes as much of a legitimate claim as shutting off your kindle. So, it's pointless.

While most devices are not likely to cause a problem, what if some devices could cause problems? How can they gaurantee that no such device could be created? We cannot expect airlines to test every possible device to create a conclusive list. Nor can we expect a stewardess to recognize every device on such a list to know which might cause a problem and which would not. That expectation is unreasonable even for most tech folk. If some devices are allowed and others are not, then we can have a passenger belligerence issue. One passenger could insist on using their leaky device because the passenger across the aisle is using their non-leaky device. It is much less problematic to have a simple "all off" policy when needed. Besides, as MO3iusONE observed, what's the big deal anyway? If those addicted to smoking can abstain for the whole duration of the flight, surely those addicted to gadgets can abstain for just the takeoff and landing.

Whenever I fly they always say turn your devices off or put them in airplane mode for the entire flight. I put mine in airplane mode and then I'm perfectly free to use them during takeoff and any other time.

Actually look up the video of a guy using a cell phone at a gas station. The cell phone could cause static shock which ignite the fumes when pumping gas. Thats why they are precautions. They could happen.
