Messages Beta App Allows You to Transfer Any Type of Files to iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch From a Mac
Earlier in the week, Apple had released a beta version of Messages for Mac, which will be one of the major features of OS X Mountain Lion that will be released to the public later this summer.
Messages replaces iChat and allows you to send unlimited messages, high-quality photos and videos directly from your Mac to another Mac or an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

Is there a specific package I need to download to be able to view / download non-multimedia files in iMessage? I noticed this feature myself back when this first came out so I tried using it to send my Siri Keys to my friend and he wasn't able to open them (but if I email them to him, Mail is able to open them fine).

No, you can't currently open/start unsupported files within messages.app.The only reason you can view and open such files within mail.app its because iFile hooks it up.I'm sure we'll get an update for iFile which will allow this feature in messages.app too.

so does this mean we can save those files too, no need to connect via usb, just message then.

Yes, you are right. You can find all attachments in "/var/mobile/library/sms/attachments".

love this feature, except not sure if its a bug but this is really needed instead of just sending things through email i can just iMessage myself, quick and simple, i use ifile to wifi transfer files at the moment.

What about the mp3? Will they also have a feature that can transfer straight to iPod? That is a feature so badly needed. I need to become a developer now to start some of these things including becoming part of the JB community

Needs to work better in both directions

Any way to get back the FB, Gtalk, MSN I lose from switching from Adium? This is an interesting beta, have yet to try out the video and adding email address to the caller ID.
