AT&T Planning to Allow App Developers to Pay For Your iPhone Data Usage
The Wall Street Journal reports that AT&T is working on a new service that will allow developers of mobile apps and content providers to pay for users data usage charges to the wireless carrier.
John Donovan - AT&T's network and technology head provided the details of the service to WSJ at the Mobile Congress 2012 that kicked off today. He compared the service to the toll-free calling for mobile broadband.

in general it's just ridiculous and a sad state. Now in this day of age with cloud computing, video streaming, people doing p2p/torrents/newsgroups for large files we have such ridiculous limitations.2GB for mobile on average and 150-250gb on average for the home user. It's a joke. The USA in general is way behind the times with the rest of the world when it comes to the internet on both the home and mobile fronts.

Freakin AT&T. ???
-
Thank god I don't pay my AT&T bill. Get mom to do that sh*t
-
darn AT&T all about the benjamins, why do they even pay to figure how much they lost in something that cost them to do that research, and hell thats totally wrong anyway i say 90% of people with iphone have unlimited MMS & SMS
-
This is no good I think the expense would be passed down to us in some Way, shape or form and texting cost the company nothing it's pure profit f*cking greedy b*stards thier should be a patition not to allow this
-
People who have unlimited SMS/mms still use what's app.. You mean carriers lost 13.9 billion in overage charges.
-
It didnt cost them anything. It's a projection as to how much they COULD have made had we used there service and paid for it instead of going elsewhere when a company loses money it's because they didn't hit there estimated sale projections not cause they lost money..... Wake up people
-
F*cking hate AT&T. Can't wait till my contract is up. F*cking as*holes.
-
This is just like what sold us on "unlimited data plans". Either they know they're stuck with us after all, or they're gonna sell more snake oil to hide their next long range business plan
-
Just when I thought AT&T couldn't get any more greedy, this brings it to a whole new level of greediness.
-
That's funny AT&T. Greedy bastards. Lol.
-
What am I missing? AT&T throttles users for data usage and complains iPhones use too much data and now they are looking to increase data usage because a business is paying for it, they have an angle and it is not going to benefit the consumer. That you can count on from the past history of AT&T
-
Great idea AT&T! Since you guys are really hurting for money. ...........Oh wait, no you're not. EFF y'all greedy bastards.
-
Why don't AT&T ban the apps that hog their network. Wont be long before AT&T will be telling Apple how to do business
-
Every company is in the business to make money. I don't blame them for trying to milk it. I bet if everyone cancelled their data plan on ATT, they'll reconsider their strategy. Too bad that won't happen. As long as people are willing to pay, they'll continue to charge more and more. It's not ATT's fault, it's just business and every company does it.
-
That is the most repulsively greed motivated thing I have ever heard. AT&T. REALLY???? That is some blatantly greedy proposition. Considering your already ripping your coustomers off that's not enoug now you want to unleash you money grubbing cash hounds on app or service developers ? That's crazy your already getting enough money. The funny part is that some stupid bastard that thought this crap up probably thought it was a great Idea. Here's one for you AT&T higher some people who have a IQ that has three digits. And preferably someone with a soul.
-
That's why they all suck. Damn the big corporations .
-
Theres yet another reason why i switched to tmobile last month!!we need a bb unlock and stay away from this greedy bastards!! All they want is our money!!! Mofos!!!
-
Hahahaha the day that happens is the day apple ends their contract with AT&T iPhones. AT&T will suffer without the iPhone. For all these people that always complain about AT&T why don't you just leave instead of complaining over and over
-
Good thing but who is ready to pay for all downloading of their data usage. So its never gonna help to customers.Hope AT&T's new service seems to be failed
-
What about apples Imessage does this mean apple with have to pay to lol
-
Lossing money from lost SMS? Really. If I didn't use any of those APPs what makes AT&T think I would send more SMS messages. They sound like the government, if we pay less taxes it cost the government money. BOTH ARE FULL OF B.S.!!! I can't wait for the T-mobile compatible iPhone. If it never comes then good-bye iPhone, hello Droid device and hello T-mobile.
-
That is right, why would the developer pay?
-
There's gotta be a money making gotcha twist to this.My cynical hypothesis: The 'Free' delivery applies only after you have used up your allotted data plan. Example: Johnny has a $30/3gb data plan. He wants to download Season 1 of 'Game of Thrones' while visiting no-internet-grandma and sees that it's 'Free data delivery', but misses the fine print that explains that it will first use his regularly monthly data usage. Once that 3GB is used up the content provider will be charged for the download. Now that Johnny has used up 3GB any other data is now in overage charge land from webpages to social media programs and messenger programs.

No. It's thank your mom you don't have to pay your phone bill. My daughter rang up an $800 bill once and that was the end of her phone. Get a job.
-
LOL That's certainly sneaky! But I believe AT&T would love the idea, especially if it isn't what they had in mind.
