Saurik Explains Why Cydia Needs to Reload Data Every Time It's Launched
Although a lot of parallels are drawn between the App Store and Cydia, a major factor that differentiates the two is the time it takes for the two to be ready from a "cold start."
As Cydia downloads the entire package index from third party servers to store them locally, the launch time can increase considerably depending on your connection speed.
Saurik explain this in detail, in response to a question asked on Reddit:

I miss No Rock :/ it didn't require the long wait times like Cydia and wasn't ugly like Cydia either...
-
Rock also had only a quarter of the apps cydia has so sure it was faster. Ok so it was nicer lookin he could work on that I guess or someone could help and do a theme for it
-
Whenever i fire up Cydia i go take a shower, dry off, dress up, make me a yummie cappucino, read my mail on my ipad and usually i take a peek on my iphone to see if its ready.....i like multitasking while waiting :)
-
I usually load Cydia, make a snack or take care of a quick task. When I come back to my iPhone4,usually Cydia is loaded and ready to go.
-
that's technically not "multi-tasking" - you're just doing different things, 1 at a time until it's ready.

Saurik, thank you for Cydia!!!
-
all those people complaining just be greatful thanks saurik
-
Cydia rocks :-) thanks guys
-
Saurik, you are the man and Cydia is amazing!

I think it takes a while with my iphones because i have 28 repo's installed on each one. My iphone 4S 32Gb soc is tuned to run at 1.1GHz but that doesnt make any difference compared to the other iphones (i own every generation, model and color made by the poor chinese workers). I also noticed that running Cydia lots of ram is used which is not freed again the moment the entire process is finished. For the record, im not complaining and 2 big tumbs up for Saurik (my PayPal donations proved that i hope)!

is just perfect
-
It loads within 10-20 on my 4s i dont see the big deal. Huge thanks Saurik. Other people stop being cheap get faster internet or new 4s haha
-
10-20 what? Seconds? Minutes? Hours? Days?
-
Days...
-
All those complaining. Get an effing grip!
-
It loads much faster on the 4S..
-
ungratefull people.. with my old 3G and 3Gs it way.... slowww.but with 4G and 4Gs it just going smooth.so ungratefull people, you get now for years free service that works perfect (most of the time) be kind en modest and say thank saurik, insted of crying spoiledbabys.
-
Fair enough but there will be ways around it?
-
If he was having a pull while showering then it could be multitasking
-
I must admit Cydia is Good loads quick on my ip4 & iPad but I do miss how Rock worked. It was quick, it looked more pleasant to the eye and it didn't matter what you installed paid for or free you could restore all or selected tweaks etc from the built-in backup/restore.Yeah cydia hosts a number of apps that will do this for you but Ive not found 1 that performs as well as ( ROCK ) did.Ive used Rock, Cydia, ICY and a couple others and Rock was by far the best in my opinion why cant Saurik Publish Rock as well and give the users the option to choose, if he now owns both surely he can update the rock client or incorporate the features from Rock into Cydia...?
-
To me Rock's backup/restore sucked unless you were restoring to the same firmware. Cydia is good. It's not like it's opened all the time and needs to be quick. It's opened like twice a day if that and a lot on a fresh jailbreak.
-
Thank you for it all
-
uhh ya that's multi tasking he's doing thoesr activities while he is waiting for cydia to load which itself is an activity so i think that counts as multitasking
-
Installer was the best. Back on iOS 1.1 on the iPhone 2G. The first of its kind. Way before cydia and way before icy. Cydia takes about 30 seconds to 1 minute to load on my 3GS.

It boggles the mind how ungrateful you all are, after all Saurik and his Cydia has done for the jailbreak community. Those extra few seconds are more than worth it, when you consider what you are getting in return; freeing your device from the confines of Apple, a reliable source for finding and managing software, a trusted place where developers and consumers can interact and produce an ever-improving environment for testing the limits of jailbroken devices. To quote someone above, "get an effing grip."
