The New iPad And Apple TV Support H.264 Compression; Helps Keep File Sizes of 1080p iTunes Store Content Down
Along with introducing the Retina display iPad and the new Apple TV, Apple, at its iPad media event, also announced that it would be adding an option to download or stream 1080p content via iTunes, alongside the already existing 720p option.
Ars Technica compared both the formats available on the iTunes Store. They note that, although the number of pixels double when moving from 720p to 1080p quality, the sizes do not differ by more than a factor of 1.5.

hmmm if I buy the 1080p for the future will my iPad 2 still convert it somehow?

i want my 4s camera to record in this format. annoying having a few minute recording taking up several gigabyte of space

Even the 4S should support it, right?

"720p version (right) verses 1080p version. Notice the text on the bottle."Is this a typo or is the image on the right actually 720p? If this is correct, the text on the bottle look clearer in 720 than the "1080" on the "left".Please confirm or clarify? Thanks! Please

1080p video is pointless on a screen that size. Unless you are going to play it on a TV larger than 42" it is a total waste of bandwidth and, more importantly, storage. Also, considering the fact that a 1080p file is generally more than 2X the size because of the screen have more than 2x the pixels it is obviously under heavier compression.

The picture on the right may have better sharpness on the text, but it has awful artifacting on the skin the supposed 720 on the left has a better film-like quality.

So we have to compare a closeup of Wolowitz's nose? Really? You couldn't get a screenshot of Penny?????
