Apple Offers Royalty Free License For Its Nano-SIM Patents
Last week, we reported that Apple was fighting for an even smaller SIM card for future iPhones and iPads and was up against rivals such as Motorola, RIM and Nokia who have proposed "nano-SIM" cards as the next industry standard for miniaturized SIM cards to European Telecommunications Standards Institutes (ETSI).

why bother trying to shrink the simcard even further??? that sh+t is small enough already...

Well this about this. Look at sim card and look on all this plastic around, I am sure there are ways to get plastic part as well as actual chip down size. Now this is not it. If you think chip is small well let's look at phone mechanism to accept it. You'll need some kind of a tray or a door to keep it locked, smaller chip smaller mechanisms and pins needed to keep it in. So it's not just chip size but also how phone integrate it. Basically smaller sim more place for bigger battery or additional space for let's say NFC or may be some other hardware .... just saying it's a lot more in size than you think at first. If you disassemble iPhone 4 you'll see that place where sim tray is at whole metal part of it actually takes a lot of space on motherboard I'd say as much as A5 chip itself ......

Make the sim card the size of a pin.
