Man what trade offs... I like the idea of less lag on my phone, especially when opening contacts or trying to type most of the time.
I really don't like when Safari crashes on me either.
I really DO like Cydia and all the stuff I can do with my jailbroken 3G though. I say wait for a newer winpwn or a more significant update.

Cydia isn't really worth having just yet, in my opinion. I only ever jailbroke my iphone 2g to run summerboard and have my own wallpaper on the main screen, cydia can't do this yet. I'm upgrading, as the slow typing and contacts is driving me crazy!

IT WILL BE NOT LOCKED! Update works fine, it just strips Cydia and all unofficial apps from your phone. This is valid only if you update from 2.0 to 2.0.1
It's a minor update and for minor updates you don't have to unlock it again.
Down side is that you'll have no means to jailbreak it.
I've done this with 3 2G phones already.

Forgot to mention that SPEED is the word for this upgrade. The phone is noticeably faster and much more responsive.

I have a 2.0 3g jailbroken. what do I have to do in order to get this update? I know I'll be losing all my apps. Do I simply accept the update in iTunes? Do I restore in iTunes 1st with a previous backup?

If you are not looking to unlock your iPhone 3G in the near future, then all you need to do is update your iPhone with the latest firmware via iTunes.

If you have not updated iPhone 3G with the iPhone firmware 2.0.1 that was released yesterday then you should be able to jailbreak iPhone 3G with Pwnage Tool 2.0.1.

is it because iphonedev team have been working on original baseband. Couldn't they unlock with new3g baseband sometime down the road? Will it even be possible? Sorry for the noob questions -

Hey mike/miguel,
The iPhone Dev Team appear to be currently working on unlocking the baseband that was bundled with iPhone firmware 2.0.
They had also achieved a major milestone in their objective as they were able to downgrade iPhone 3G's modem firmware. You can read all about it here:

My iphone now need activition. I am in Europe. I have the sim but i don't know the number to unlock the iphone. :S:S.

Paul- Are you running on t-mobile or another gsm carrier or are you using cingular/at&t? I want to do the update but if it means I can't use my 16 gig non-3g phone its not worth it.

in my opinion 1.1.4 was the gold standard...some apps in the app store are smart but honestly. The 2.01 update just brings back the stability, which was already there with 1.1.4....

My phone was unlocked and jailbroken on 2.0 and I simply updated to 2.0.1 through itunes and its working great. Seems like the jailbroken was wiped out, but thats no big deal because i didnt have any unofficial apps since upgrading to 2.0. I am also on T-Mobile (and LOVING the freedom!) I have noticed the faster typing on the keyboard (like it was on 1.1.4) and quicker response and the more stability.
