If you have an HP printer, I and others have found that disconnecting the printer USB cable will also fix the issue.

As far as Vista users are concerned, before going too crazy with settings and such...check to see if you are using either a Logitech webcam, or an HP printer. These two devices use drivers that as of right now conflict with iTunes 8/iPhone. All you have to do (until Apple fixes issue) is uplug the USB connector to these devices (whichever one of them you are running) and then plug in the iPhone and it will work fine.

I am on a Compaq Presario V6000 Laptop and I just unplugged my Logitech Wireless mouse and plugged in my iphone and it worked fine without a glitch. With the mouse plugged in I got the blue screen of death.
