The simple ringtone hack that was discovered almost a year back still seems to work with the latest version of iTunes (v8.0.1). It is based on the fact that iTunes differentiates a song file and a ringtone by the file extension. While we all know that the song file extension...

THIS **** DOES NOT WORK!!!! THE ONLY WAY TO MAKE RINGERS WORK ON IPHONE 3G is to use iRinger at www.iringer.net THIS WORKS!!!!

Sounds like you're doing something wrong....this has always and continues to work with my 3g.
-
I have done this several times and it works.

The above video gives error and seems to be removed from CNET, here is the same video on YouTube:

you can create ringtones via garageband....

This site is a great resource for iPhone ringtones. You can listen to them before downloading and they download already formatted in the iPhone format (along with other formats if you need them).

I have an iphone 3G and i make all my ringtones in garageband. I drag a song in, cut it down to my favorite 30s and then click export ringtone to itunes

Thanks so much. It works great, if you follow all the steps including deleting the clipped version from itunes at step 4. Great job!
-
great!!!!!!!
it works very well -
Step 5 doesnt work...
"Go back the song on your desktop and right click on your song and chose “Get info.” Go to the name and extension section and change the extension from .m4a to .m4r (or you can just change the extension right from your desktop)"
is not so easily done as describe! the file will appear as a .m4a and not a .m4r after opening with itunes :-/
looks like u need some converter.. -
man yall r a real life saver i saved so much money from this its unbelievable thanxs cuz it works 100%

I've created hundreds of ringtones this way and it has worked fine with itunes 8.0 and firmware 2.1. Can anyone confirm this still works with 2.2? Even if it does will my older created ringtones still work?
-
I have done all the steps up to getting the m4r file into iTunes. Once here, it won't let me drag it into the ringtones section. I click get info, and its "Kind" is "Ringtone". 20 seconds, 123kb, 64kbps. iTunes 8.0.1
I've tried a bunch of ways, and nothing seems to get it into that ringtones section. Am I the only one??
-
it does so work people..if you dont have create AAC as an option..go into your preferences, then general, then select import using AAC encoder. make sure u delete the version once its out on your desktop, then bring it back in and it works...
-
and parker, dont drag into the ringtone section, you just drag into into library, and since u changed it to m4r, it will auto go to your ringtone
-
um with windows, using properties to change the extension will not work. You have to open the ACC file using a a text editor, and find the two pieces of code that denote the extension. they will look something like this: "ftypM4A (gibberish)M4A" if you change both the "A"s to "R" so it reads ftypM4R etc.. and save it as what ever you want it should now be recognised as a ringtone file on any version of itunes, with any iphone
-
Yes it works with firmware 2.2 and iTunes 8.
-
An easier way in WinXP is go to Tools then Folder Options then view then uncheck the box next to hide extensions for known file types. Click apply. Now the file will show the extension at the end. Just change it as needed.
