iOS 6 Features: New Maps App With 3D Mode, But Major Home Screen Changes And Android-Like Widgets Unlikely
9to5Mac reports that they've received some interesting details about a major feature in iOS 6 - Apple's next generation mobile operating system.
According to 9to5Mac's "trusted sources", iOS 6 will feature a new Maps application that will be developed in-house and Apple will finally stop using Google for the maps database.

Title is a bit misleading... makes it look like major home screen changes will be present, and only Android style widgets are unlikely.

Good point, we've changed the title to avoid the confusion. Thanks for pointing it out.

Very disappointed, what matters about map is not only technology, but also how rich is your database, and I don't think the companies that Apple acquired have access to as much resource as Google does. People in US and UK may not feel anything different, but what about Singapore, China, Vietnam or say Peru? Apple products are not even officially sold in some countries but they buy it anyway, does Apple have enough map data for them?I highly doubt it.

AFAIK, Google maps is definitely the best free map service I ever see, especially when you're talking about POI data.
-
It's called grammar...learn it.

Nokia Maps gets my vote as best. The maps are downloadable (which means no data cost on the go), plus free voice. ;)
-
No problem :)

I just dont get it, everyone is about widgets and the android home screen system. but everytime someone says anything about how android has a better interface, someone jumps on him and attacks him. so which is it... android or ios.... or iphone with android lol

The Google maps app needs to be updatable from googles side or a downloadable app so it can keep up with there updates

In terms of POI and publci transport it's not, but I do agree Nokia maps is one of the best, I used to have Nokia N Series phones(with S60 V2/V3).And data is not a problem for me. I always waste major part of my data plan cuz I got wifi at home and in university.
-
And strictly speaking, if you have aGPS on (by default it is), you do have to spend some data...Back in the old days when I only had 50M EDGE plan I did care about that (I used to turn aGPS off!), but now with 1G 3G data plan I don't even bother to install usage monitor app...

I don't think Apple will allow or Google is willing to, gotta be one of them.
-
If you were Google, would you want your smartphone competition to have a better or just-as-good service as your own smartphone?
-
pointless update

Nokia maps are crap except in select countries. Google still has the best coverage.

iOS needs a solid native gps. Solid is the key word here, one of the fine selling points on the droid has always been its native gps.

Wow another step backward for ios there is no way apple will have the info they need to do this unless they Steal it from google it took google a long time to get the info they have to run maps But don't worry by the time iOS 10 comes out they mite be caught up to where it's usable .........
