The New York Times reports that Facebook is planning to release a smartphone by 2013 and has hired former Apple employees who have worked on the iPhone and iPad.

This is not the first time we're hearing rumors of a Facebook phone. Back in November 2011, a rumor claimed that the Facebook Phone existed and is codenamed "buffy". Facebook had reportedly partnered with HTC to build these phones, which would be running a custom version of Android.

I have a feeling fb will be irrelevant in about 5 or so years. And I don't care much for websites getting their own phones, or OSes for that matter. Not to get off topic but Google's getting too big and too stubborn for their own good.

I think FB should try to get a phone out there. If its good - from a consumers point of view - it'll be MORE competition and thats just going to be good for all platform users. I say go for it Mark.

I know we don't care about grammar anymore, but really, the punctuation in this article is so poor it's truly difficult to follow your points. Can't you find someone to proofread?

rather than spend millions on a Facebook phone, make a quality integrated Facebook app that is revolutionary. Then charge $1.99 for it and mane $0.99 for upgrades down the road... They would stand a better chance and likely make hundreds of millions if not billions. Hell add IAP to the Facebook app with some new games that work on iOS and you could see the next Trump.

Facebook is getting worse by the day. Timeless is a huge fail. I dont know even 1 person who likes it. They're gonna turn into MySpace in no time. By 2013, it might be too late for Facebook to come out with a phone.

Same could be said of Apple. And is that really the reason why Google doesn't offer turn by turn on iOS?

FB is suffering from investor confidence issues atm. So perhaps this is just something to provide stability to share price?

Sounds to me like Facebook is trying to make a cell phone just like the iPhone and hire people that worked for Apple so they can STEAL detailed information and designs of the phone an switch it up abit an make it there own. It would be nice to see and I think the app would still be a success, but the phone will be a FLOP

I think they should say: Pay 5 dollars a year and then get access to a facebook phone system, video konference calling and no ads at all. Or free like now. It's up to the user.

A Facebook phone is a terrible idea. Every heard the saying a day late and a dollar short. Apple and Google have already cornered the market. Facebook's popularity isn't enough to grab a sizable market share to be considered relevant. The biggest problem with newcomers is the lack of Apps. Apps are what sell smart phones, take away the apps and a smart phone loses all of its appeal. Apple and Google already have a huge library of apps and an huge invested user following. All the other smart phone makers with far more experience are continually falling further behind. Consumers have already made their decision and jury is out. We don't want a newly branded smart phone that does more of the same, (probably less) so Mike Zuckerman save your self the time effort and humiliation and stick to what you know, software.
