Not much new really in iOS. The big deal is the maps which is nice, especially the turn-by-turn navigation. Most of the really cool changes, including some of the map ones, need Siri so only iPhone 4S benefits. They're running out of cool stuff to do to make iOS better. The only thing left that people really want is widgets and more customization. Good luck with that.

Oh yeah, iOS 6 will release in the Fall so probably a new phone then too. No surprise there.

Apple are making some incredible improvements to their iOS's which I think are amazing. The most exciting thing for me is SIRI for the iPad 3.
