Need advice/Help for upgrading my iPhone 3gs *Please look*

Hey guy's im going to keep this as short as possible, I have a jailbroken iPhone 3gs running on 4.3.3 (8J2). My iPhone's BB/Modem Firmware is 05.16.02. It has been like this for past year or so but now i'm getting bored of being on the outdated 4.3.3 and i want to know if it's possible to update my iPhone in iTunes to the latest 5.1.1. I've been told by a few people that it's not possible to update my iPhone to 5.1.1 due to the jailbreak ect my phone is running on and that if i did i would brick my phone although i'm pretty sure they were lying. Anyway if anybody has any knowledge with this sort of stuff then any advice/help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance,
