updating to 5.1.1 not working

had non-functioning semi tethered jail broke 5.1 iPod touch. trying to update to 5.1.1 to be able to have untethered iPod...but update keeps failing...any ideas?

What error are you getting?

just says 'update failed' i try again and same thing...so now i just rebooted with red snow as per your suggestion last night, and safari is working so i might just leave it for the moment. but plan on trying to upgrade and re-do the jailbreak soon. perhaps it needed to reboot in redsnow to get it working ok to be able to update?

You should have got an error code.

says: Software update failed. an error occurred downloading iOS 5.1.1.
that is the entire message. -
there was no other code...i've tried since successful rebooting on redsnow (did i get that name wrong?)

There should ideally be a number in the error message

i know, you mentioned that, but i just tried again and transcribed everything that was on the screen. the only number was...5.1.1....
