Can't get my iPod to upgrade to 5.1.1

i have an iPod, jail broke with redsnow...acting up. have had to reboot on redsnow several times as safari and cydia and others just stop working. now mail just opens a blank screen. when i try to upgrade to 5.1.1 i just get a message 'upgrade failed'...no error number...help?

Tried restoring in DFU mode?

I have tried rebooting...is that the same?

It was definitely messed up, safari and mail not opening etc...then when i rebooted, those programs work, but the software still will not upgrade. No error code, just says, 'software update failed'...
