Hey @smthomas7563
As far as I remember, the highest iOS version for the iPhone 3G is 4.2.1. You cannot upgrade to iOS 5. If you're adventurous enough, and the iPhone 3G is your secondary phone you can try whited00r which brings some of iOS 5 features to older devices (http://www.iphonehacks.com/2012/01/whited00r-brings-ios-5-ios-4-features-to-iphone-2g-iphone-3g-ipod-touch-1st-gen-ipod-touch-2nd-gen.html) although it's very likely that you'll face bugs.
Regd jailbreak & unlock, I'm not very sure, you'll have to wait for an expert's opinion on that. I'm very sure it's jailbreakable, but for unlock you'll have to most likely preserve your baseband.

Hey @smthomas7563 as @Rounak has mentioned, iOS 4.2.1 is the highest version available for iPhone 3G users.
You will lose the jailbreak and unlock if you upgrade to iOS 4.2.1 and you will have to jailbreak and unlock it again.
But before you decide to update, you may want to check the features in iOS 4.2.1 that are compatible with iPhone 3G to figure out if it is worth the upgrade. -
thanks i looked over it and it is not worth to me to update to 4.2.1. thanks for telling me that. u saved me a headache. what i want to do is change my text tones to custom tones. how would i do that?

I think Winterboard does that.
