Before switching to an icloud email address, I had gmail setup as an exchange account with active sync and that worked well. I don't see any reasons to use a separate app for gmail.

Indeed! I always hated the Gmail app, never truly feeling like it was... Well... Designed worth a damn...
Looks like they're trying, but still not quite there...

I use the gmail app strictly and have since it came out. The direct access to labels and archive/trash plus the ability to send as all of the accounts I have setup with gmail make it very similar to what I do on the desktop (via the web-based gmail).
