I think I might have just turned my iPhone into a useless brick

My brother sold me his iPhone 4, it was running on version 4.1 and was jailbroken.
After syncing it to my itunes I was unable to open any of the apps linked to his computer, and pretty much every app I tried to download from the appstore said I needed version #.##
I figured I needed to upgrade the software, and googled it.
I stumbled upon this and followed it:
http://www.coolestguyplanettech.com/upgrade-jailbroken-iphone-to-ios-5-and-preserve-baseband-with-redsn0w/
Now I can't even do anything on my iPhone because it says it needs a sim that "came with your iphone"
Is all hope lost or is there anything I can do to actually have some use out of my iPhone?
Thanks..

BTW it is an american iPhone with AT&T but I use it in Norway with a norwegian service provider

Is the phone unlocked by software/gevey? It appears to be locked, and needs an AT&T sim card to "activate" the phone again. Do you have one lying around? If not, you can purchase one on ebay for cheap.

Oh so any AT&T sim card would do?

and also it appears to be very locked, I can't do anything at all with it except choose a language, connect to wifi, enter the pin of my sim card which doesn't help, and make an emergency call.

I did this on my 3gs and turned out the Sim reader was dead so if you can't get it to register then this may be the problem and see apple as the will sell you a refurbished one as long as you restore it to factory default settings (IE. as in no jailbreak software)
