HELP - Exploring back-ups

I have an iPhone 4. Its not unlocked. I have back-up files from a previous iphone that id like to take some files out of. Does anybody know how to do this? Ive been looking at back-up explorers but they only seem to explore the back-up on the iphone. Thats not what i want. These files are on my desktop. I want to open them and take files out.
