New here and would like to jailbreak 3GS, but already on 6.0.1

I've been given (yes so nice!), an iPhone 3GS, with ios 6.0.1 already on it. It has new bootrom 359.3.2, never been jailbroke, and factory unlocked. No SHSH blobs ever saved. I want to jailbreak, so researched and saw first thing is to save blobs, but TU says its not possible now. My question is can I still go back to ios 5.1.1 to do an unteathered jailbreak and not worry about blobs? Or, should I wait till unteathered JB can be done with ios 6? I don't want to do teathered JB just in case I have to hard reset away from PC.
