Probem with JB 4S

My 4S is JB running 6.1. All of a sudden the other day, the phone is Edge no 4G and the phone is unstable - crashes a lot. I haven't downloaded or installed anything that is questionable (apps). I need to reset. Can I use a backup of my phone? How do I prevent it from automatically upgrading to 6.13?
