enabling WiFi sync without going through iTunes

Hi guys
my iphone has stopped charging. I've tried cleaning the dock connector port, changed cables, power sources, etc and followed all suggestions i could find online.
THe phone only charges while turned off. I don't get the bleep noise when connecting to power, nor does it say it is charging. However, if i plug the phone in, turn it off completely and leave it, it will be charged when i turn it on. This must be charging via trickle charge.
Now, although its annoying it doesn't really bother me anymore. the thing that does bother me is the fact that I can't update or sync it as the computer doesn't see it.
I think my only option would be to somehow enable 'WiFi Sync' without going through iTunes. Anyone any ideas? If I could get this to work, I'd be very very pleased!
Many thanks
