How do i unlock my iphone 5

i have a iphone 5 I forgot the password for it and im trying to restore it to factory setting but I keep getting a error message saying it cannot install software on iphone. what should I do? I heard that I will not be able to put ios7 but I don't mind as long as I can put the original software and be able to use the phone. can someone help me ?

yes I broke up with my girlfriend had her in my contract so I asked for the phone back but she gave it to me with a passcode. so I tried restoring it but it did not work im not sure what ios it has as of now not sure if she updated her phone

I tried to but it gave me a message saying " the iphone could not be restored an unknown error occurred (3194)

It looks like you have host file entries for apple.com in your host file. Remove those entries and try again.
