iphone 4s stuck on recovery mode. errors out of restore every time.

so I bought a 32g iphone 4s on cl as my wife smashed her 5. it had the connect to iTunes screen because he said he did a factory reset. cannot restore normally on iTunes and tried the dfu method and still gets the unknown error message (1) when it gets to the updating firmware part. have also d/l latest apsw for the 4s and tried the shift restore method but still errors out at same spot. please help if you can. I can follow steps easily just unfamiliar with troubleshooting apple products. the current iOS on it is unknow due to being stuck on recovery.

have tried to use tinyumbrella to get out of recovery but just reboots back in to recovery mode. someone please help.
