Is it possible to jailbreak/unlock iphone 4 BEFORE activation?

I have an iphone with a broken power off button, so I restore it on itunes as I was told by apple to do so. I wanted to know if attempting to unlock it or jailbreak it would keep me from activating the phone on a pre paid carrier such as Straightalk..etc????
