You can upgrade to 4.0.1 if you have your shsh save on cydia. I can confirm that after updating to 4.0.2 on my 3G in dfu mode then jailbreaking with redsn0w while only ticking cydia then installing features there is improvement in apps opening and general icon scrolling animation looks and feels nice and zippy ^_~

I am still using the iphone 3GS OS 3.1.3. I am not in a hurry to upgrade to iOS 4, because I heard that, with extra features such as multitasking(which I doubt I will ever use), the iOS 4 performance is actually worse than OS 3.1.3. So I think the OS 3.1.3 is very stable and fast, best for iphone 3GS.

So what do I do to jailbreak and unlock my iPhone 3GS? I want to buy the new iPhone 4 which I can now my contract is up and want to jailbreak and unlock the 3GS and sell it on ebay. I think I can get a good deal on it but is it safe to unlock and jailbreak phones? I'm hearing from folks here and there and noone seems to want to give me any advice but most folks are doing it. Any help is appreciated ...

find the 4.0.1 software.. google it..download.. then connect to itunes.. do a "restore" while holding shift key.. browse for the 4.0.1 software.. and so on.. that should work.. if am wrong, am sorry.. hehehe
