-I got exactly the same problem. I did some research about that:
Mac OS X 10.5.6 disables recognition of a device (like the iPhone) in DFU mode. It is not known if this is intentionally disabled by Apple or just a bug.
One solution ist to replace two plugin kexts with the ones from Mac OS X 10.5.5 and then rebuild the kextcache. This innvolves some knowledge of the system and heavy use of the application Terminal.

This is where the Automator programm Fix_DFU_10_5_6 comes into action. I put it together to do the complete job with one mouse click. The user has to be logged into his Mac with administrator privileges (usually the account you used while setting up your Mac) and has to provide the admin's password.

    The programm then:
    1. checks if you are at Mac OS X 10.5.6 or better (if not will quit)
    2. show a readme
    3. quits all running apps (with save option)
    4. backup the original files (AppleUSBHub.kext and IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext from 10.5.6) in a new folder on your Desktop
    5. ask for your admin password
    6. copy AppleUSBHub.kext and IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext from 10.5.5 into the desired location on your Mac
    7. set owner:group and permissions
    8. rebuild the kextcache
    9. reboot your Mac

Right at the end the programm will tell you that the cache is beeing rebuild, just let it do its job.
Your Mac will automatically reboot when done - DFU is enabled then.

Thanks for this tutorial. Unfortunately it didn't work. I need help! After iTunes says it's getting ready to restore the phone, I get an error message. I tried to start over a few times but nothing. My phone seems to be in DFU mode and not responding. What can I do? Thanks!

    Hi,

All went well, entered dfu, prompted to restore by itunes, selected the Custom file but was given an error of incompatibility. (ie using wrong firmware, which I'm not). I'm using 3GS on itunes 10.01. Any suggestions? I'm led to believe this is some sort of signing issue from reading elsewhere.

Any hope if there will be a hack available to unlock iphone 3gs with IOS4.1 and 05.14.02 base band. I purely bought it to use it outside US. If it is not, I will have to return the phone. My 30 day period will get over next week.

    Please reply.

    Thanks.

I get stuck at 6 seconds when trying to enter DFU mode
I have iphone 4 running 4.0.1 jailbroken. I have pwnage tool for mac 4.1.2

I shouldn't need to enter DFU mode since i already have jailbroken phone except when i try to update with custom firmware made with pwnage tool i get an error in itunes.

so, i can't enter pwnage DFU mode and I can't update to custom firmware created with pwnage without entering DFU mode.

    Any advice?

Connect it to your computer, it should give you a prompt which says that it is in DFU Mode and follow the steps of restoring it with custom firmware i.e. Step 19 onwards.

You probably used Jailbreakme to jailbreak iOS 4.0.1, which means that your iPhone isn't pwned. You need to follow the instructions.

Ok I got it to go kinda through. But it won't. The warning thingy says "The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occured (21).

Help please. This kinda really blows.

It looks like you haven't Pwned your iPhone. Try following the instructions again.

it seems my iPhone is successfully bricked. Can't seem to get it to upload the new IPSW. I even went through the whole thing again to remake an ipsw. Incidentally, it never asked me about whether i've previously pwned. wonder if this makes a difference and if there's anything I can do about it.

F****ck I am getting error as well. After creating a custom IPSW build, when I browse it with iTunes it gives me error.. Using MAX OS 10.4
Tomorrow will try to do the same with MAC OS 10.6.4 and let you know about results.
