Step By Step Guide to Jailbreak iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.1 using PwnageTool 3.1
The iPhone Dev Team had warned iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS users who had jailbroken and/or unlocked their iPhone to avoid upgrading to iPhone OS 3.1 a day before it was released and had asked them to wait for them to release the PwnageTool. iPhone Dev Team released PwnageTool 3.1...

When they released PT a couple days ago, I tried it and it worked, the only thing that changed it was the the Iphone recognize the line, but not the network on : settings/general/about, weird, but it works so WTH, i dont c the network name, but still can make calls and receive plus internet trough the network, so as for me, GJ Dev-Team

According to the Dev Team it appears to be a cosmetic issue, it shouldn’t
impact coverage or signal just like you've observed. iPhone Dev Team hope to
fix this issue when they release PwnageTool to jailbreak iPhone 3GS.We've have updated the post so readers are aware of it.
Thanks CristV77.

Is this for PC users????
-
thats cool, thanks, and i really dont mind the "cosmetic" issue, as i can make and receive phone calls, thats all that matter to me, so im cool, BTW mine its a 3G, so users have a good testimony from another 3G user
Good Luck
-
as far as I know just for mac, but the PC's PT comes soon after mac's
hang in there mate
-
PwnageTool has been available only for Mac users.
Dev Team has earlier released RedSn0w for both Mac and Windows but that
didn't preserve the baseband so not sure if they'll release it until they
figure out a way to unlock the baseband update that was shipped with iPhone
OS 3.1. -
can someone send me or know where i can get a custom firmware created by the PwnageTool 3.1. I only have PC and my son updated my jailbroken iphone 3G by mistake.
-
buddy this doesnt work for pc. people cant read? just wait until the dev team releases redsn0w

It says it in the step by step "Windows users who want to unlock their iPhone 3G should either get the custom firmware created by the PwnageTool on a Mac from someone they trust or borrow their friend's Mac and follow this guide."

What happen to purplera1n ?

I have upgraded and jail broken and unlocked 2 different iPhone 3G now. both phones are now working quite well, but some advice to people experience problems:
- DON'T restore your iPhone from a backup. Just my opinion, but once you jailbreak and then restore from a backup you may encounter issues like a dropped battery and random crashes. Best bet is just to start it as a new iPhone and then sync it all over again.
- Once you have jail broken and sync'd for the first time, give your phone a hard reboot (switch it off completely and switch it back on). This fixed a lot of the problems other people have been experiencing
- Winterboard will just put the phone into a safe mode loop - don't bother with this. It will be updated to work with 3.1 eventually.
-
ok? what does this change? u still need a mac to use it.
-
I just upgrade with PT and i not getting service what can i do

Same happened to me i just installed fake carrier from Cydia and changed it.
new website were coming up

Coke ...
Is your iPhone locked to a certain carrier like AT&T? IF so, you need to go into Cydia, and install ultrasn0w. This unlocks your network.
you have to add he following repo into cydia
Hope this helps.

Purplera1n stopped working with iPhone OS 3.0.1 and George Hotz, the developer had commented that he doesn't plan to fix it so don't expect him to release something for iPhone OS 3.1.
-
As Dave mentioned, PwnageTool does not unlock iPhone 3G. It allows you to only jailbreak your iPhone 3G by allowing you to create a pre-jailbroken iPhone OS 3.1. But as it also preserves your iPhone’s baseband from getting updated so that you can use UltraSn0w to unlock it.
You can checkout this guide to unlock iPhone 3G using UltraSn0w:

I'm an AT&T customer -- I did the jailbreak, but now I have no signal. I was sure to leave "activate the phone" deselected. Any ideas?
-
I got a custom firmware from someone and i'm using a pc computer with a iphone 3g 3.1 I tried to restore it in itunes withe the custom firmware but it gets to the point where its trying to set the iphone up for restore and for somereason an error comes up. Windows shows that it must be in a USB 2.0 but it is and have no clue what's going on.
-
You don't need to activate it using PwnageTool if you are using AT&T's iPhone plans.
Try restarting your iPhone to see if it helps.
-
What is the error message?
Try it again and see if it works.
-
when i jailbreak my iphone from 3.0 to 3.1, will i lose all my jailbroken apps and start all over from the beginning as in installing all jailbroken apps? thank you.
-
Yeah, using this method will wipe out your jailbreak apps, you'll need to
reinstall them again via Cydia. -
Dear Dev team,
I accindently upgraded my i phone 3GS to OS 3.1 and now the phone is compleyely locked. Any chance of unlocking the phone soon or the money that i spent (approx $750) on it is down the drain.
Some people i have spoken to say that the phone is a complete 'dud'now and nothing ever can be done.
Pls help. -
Unfortunately, as of now Dev Team haven't figured out a way to unlock the
baseband shipped with iPhone OS 3.1 nor is there any way to downgrade the
baseband so you could unlock it. We'll keep you posted if there is any news
on that front. -
Hey how do you do this if your computer is a windowsm the first thing you have to download only works for mac.
-
Windows users who want to jailbreak their iPhone 3G should either get the custom firmware created by the PwnageTool on a Mac from someone they trust or borrow their friend's Mac and follow this guide.
-
The error msg is " the iphone could not be restore an unknown error occurred. (1611)
