This has worked perfectly for me, although a modification to the instructions: you do NOT need to put your phone in recovery mode. Just connect it to iTunes, go to the Summary tab, hold down "option" and click Restore. That will prompt you to choose your newly-created firmware, and away you go.
One word of warning: at the moment you have a choice between two bugs, depending on whether you use PwnageTool 4.0 or 4.01. 4.0 causes problems in iBooks, so if you want to use iBooks, get 4.01. However, 4.01 introduces a crasher bug for offline-capable web apps added to the home screen. Probably fewer people use those, but I use one all the time and having it not work was a deal-breaker, so I'm back on a firmware built with PwnageTool 4.0.

I didn't find in comments answer to my combination of iphone model, fw and bootrom. What do I do with 3GS, 05.11.07 firmware and it looks like new bootrom (4th and 5th digit "52") and tethered jb and unlock, running on windows?

Hello guys, my name is tenielle, my iphone doesnt work since one day after reboot, got stuck on apple logo. I have tried everything but without success. I waited until 21 of june to jailbreak but still without success. I cant access to the springboard, the max I can get is itunes screen, DFU mode or emergency calls.
Can you guys help me? I really need my phone working.

I have 3gs newbootrom,3.1.2 jailbraked. Now i want to upgrade it to 3.1.3. Is it possible? How, any guidsss? -
WARNING: something on my newly Jailbroken system was infected by "bbot", which appears to be at least a component of the ikee virus. I installed OpenSSH and immediately changed the root password, so I suspect this virus has been included either in the PwnageTool or in one of the Cydia packages I've installed (OpenSSH, Netatalk, sbsettings, etc).
To identify if your phone has been infected, check for the presence of the file /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.ikey.bbot.plist
If that's there, go to http://www.iphonefaq.org/archives/97723 for info on how to remove the virus from your system. Only symptom I saw was finding myself unable to connect via SSH after a while, and needing to reinstall OpenSSH to fix it.

I have a 3GS jailbroken with Spirit and unlocked with Ultrasn0w 0.93 and the old bootrom.Could not resist trying iOS4 using Pwnage 4.0, but after successfully creating the custom ipsw, the process fails when I try to use that ipsw via iTunes recovery mode.
Tried Pwnage 4.01 and also tried to recover using a stock image. But still stuck in recovery mode
Has anyone else seen this? Any advice?

I have the same issue. Wondering if you need to put the phone in the dfu mode instead of restore mode.

Steve, when you downgrade to 3.1.2 from os 4 do you simply point to the 3.1.2 file or do you need to direct your pc towards saurik server etc. Any pointers would be appreciated.
