The holes used for both limera1n and shatter exist in the bootrom. The key word in bootrom=ROM (Read Only Memory). Although the exploit can be broken with new firmware, the holes used for the exploits cannot be fixed by Apple. Apple needs to use new boot roms in the future to completely fix the hole. This is what is meant by unpatchable. Your device (if it currently works with these exploits) will always have that hole that can be exploited, unless you buy a new device or get it replaced.
Installing a new firmware directly from apple ALWAYS removes a jailbreak. Simply restoring your phone removes the jailbreak as well. You can just pretty much count on a way to jailbreak your device with minor exploit tweaks that use the samew holes.

So you are saying if I jailbreak using 'limera1n', I can still restore back to unjailbreak by installing new firmware or perform a restore?Another question: What does mean by 'jailbreak for life'?

It may be possible that Geohot was holding off on his exploit but once he found out that Shatter would only jailbreak "newer" devices, he said, "No guys save your, use mine, it jailbreaks all."
This is smarter because Apple is probably manufacturing less iPhone3GS and more iPhone4. Plus if you need to buy a new phone would you buy a 3GS or a 4?
The second Dev Team announced the release of Greenpois0n, there was a flood of complains from 3GS users. Now everyone is happy...for life. Thanks GeoHot.
What they need to work on now is UltraSnow for the new baseband.

Yes. DONT upgrade your iphone to 4.1
Use limera1n to jailbreak it. Go to Cydia and install UltraSnow (Need wifi connection).
Then wait for Snowbreeze or PWNTool to be able to upgrade to 4.1 without upgrading the baseband.

There is no need to wait for 3 gs jailbreak using limera1n work's fine I did that on my gs.My procedur is: connect phone to PC, run iTune, sync phone with itune, run limera1n, follow on screen instructions,after few second follow restart and it's done.After that run limera1n icon install cydia del limera1n icon job finished

IMHO. "he has a suspicion" may very likely be more than what most of us can manage. If geohot decides that his finding is enough and gives everyone a jb (gift) by himself it's his call - not ours. The fact is that he did saved SHatter for later use - FOR ALL OF US.

as limera1n is updated to fix bugs should we reinstall limera1n onto our phone and re-jailbreak or will limera1n update itself? I'm not sure which beta version that I am using but I know that the uninstall limera1n which was a problem is no more so does that mean I am on beta 4 version of limera1n? Also do you think a stable complete final version of limera1n will be released? Thanks, Ed

Actually he's the one that cared by releasing his limera1n first!!!
He did mention that if he releases limera1n after greenpois0n, crapple will be blocking both exploit in future devices as greenpois0n was meant only for iphone 4 or A4 chip devices compare to limera1n which universal and untethered as well.
So make sure you get your fact right first before you go accusing him!!!

No this is so wrong...there is nothing inferior about it. Wake up gvtqc...I think your in dream land.
I jailbroke my iphone 4 just fine so it worked perfectly and was so easy to use. Big thumbs up to Geohot from me but also to the Dev Team. You guys just need to sort your differences out and try to work together. Thanks to all you guys.

Great news for the JB! But I still have not been able to find instructions for upgrading an already jailbroken 3GS. I have an iphone 3GS, JB with JailbreakMe running iOS4.0.1. I have saved my SHSH blobs using Tiny U. What is the best method to upgrade without loosing everything such as my customizations? If possible?

I used geohot's jailbreak and am happy with it. It's a free market, and they are not getting paid, so all they get is respect and he should get it for getting it out before Dev Team...!
